Every time I plan an event, every time I plan an activity, I feel a dread in my stomach that no painkillers can dull. My mind creates endless possibilities of how it could go wrong. But almost every week, without fail, I come up with something new to share with my chapter. Not because I enjoy putting myself through the endless worrying and overthinking. Not because I think that if I put myself out there more often, it’ll get easier.

I think of creative ways to use my board position because taking these risks comes with a reward that makes it all worth it. Creative projects allow me to see the positive impact of my contributions on my chapter. Daily games I send to the group chat that might seem daunting to me can actually give someone who's bored a fun activity to do for a few hours. An event that I’m so scared to lead turns out to be one of someone’s top three events of the term. The impact that I make on my chapter rests on my willingness to put myself out there and create change.

Stop waiting for a moment that seems “perfect,” an idea that finally clicks. BBYO provides a place for you to truly be yourself, regardless of what worries you have. The sisters or brothers you gain during your time here become your closest allies, people you can lean on. These are opportunities to challenge yourself and put yourself out there in a way that might be hard. But throughout my time in BBYO, I’ve learned that the harder something seems, the more rewarding it feels. Even if it’s hard to see the real impact that I’ve made, I’ve learned to feel proud of myself for taking these risks.

My ideas aren’t perfect, but I’m excited to keep putting myself out there. Because growth is only possible if you take that first step. There are so many opportunities for projects, events, and collaborations within your chapter or even with other chapters. Even if you don’t have a board position, the possibilities are truly endless. You will never be shamed for trying your hardest to create something special for your chapter to enjoy. Instead, you’ll feel proud of yourself for taking these risks.

Since I first stepped foot in JSZ BBG in the summer of last year, I’ve felt myself growing every week. With every event I attend, I feel myself becoming more confident as the bonds I have with people strengthen. I’ve come to depend on the people around me for support. The more you put yourself out there and challenge yourself, the more people around you will recognize the courage it takes to do things that others might be afraid to try.

So the next time you see an opportunity to make a change in your chapter, take that risk. It might be the most valuable thing you can do, both for yourself and for the people around you.
